The presentation above focuses on how regular monitoring of your child’s health is key to the management of Down syndrome.

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder. The presence of a third copy of chromosome-21 causes it. Most people have 4 chromosomes in all of their cells. But people with Down Syndrome have 47 chromosomes and because of that they look different. (National Health Portal)

Children with Down Syndrome (DS) have a few common health challenges that have been well identified and reported. Awareness of some of these common health problems followed by continuous monitoring of these challenges will help reduce the adverse effects on your child’s health.

Some very common challenges, to name a few, include –

  • Recurrent infections (Skin, bladder and respiratory)
  • Thyroid hormone production in the body
  • Heart defects at birth
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Problems with vision
  • Oro-motor issues
  • Low muscle tone
  • Oro-motor issues
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Issues with the digestive system
  • Foot arch challenges
DS cannot be cured, but, careful management of health challenges can have a big impact over the quality of life of your child.
