  2. Only 20–25% of CP cases are due to birth-related brain injuries.
  3. The majority—around 80%—are caused by developmental brain defects before birth.
  4. Some developmental brain issues may have a genetic basis.
  5. Families with one child affected by CP should consider genetic counseling to assess future risk.
